In a list compiled annually by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF), voters selected one of our favorite lakes in Nebraska as one of the best for family-friendly boating and fishing in the nation. Lake McConaughy is described as a must-visit destination to satisfy anglers, boaters, campers, and hunters.

“Lake McConaughy is located in western Nebraska at the edge of the beautiful Sandhills, which provide Lake Mac with more than 75 miles of white, sandy beaches, all of which are open to the public. Boating and fishing infrastructure is located conveniently at several areas around the lake and anglers can target dozens of fish species.” – Colby Johnson, Superintendent of Lake McConaughy SRA

Criteria for the top places to boat and fish included having a public body of water within an hour of a major city, good fishing opportunities and family-friendly amenities.

The fish species found in Lake McConaughy include Walleye, White Bass, Wiper, Brown Bullhead, Smallmouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Yellow Perch, and Northern Pike.

National Fishing and Boating Week is celebrated annually by enjoying free fishing at your favorite fishing or boating lakes. This year in Nebraska, it is scheduled to start on May 19, 2018.

Free fishing days for 2018 in other states can be found here.

Wherever you are located, Fishing and Boating Week is a great opportunity for beginners to try out fishing. If you already have your fishing license, consider taking a friend or family member out fishing to enjoy nature on the water for the day. You will need a few things according to each state’s fish and wildlife agency state regulations.
